jax is a collective of like-minded artists, musicians, thinkers movers and booty-shakers, who believe there is more to records than just some grooves engraved into black plastic. their vision is to treat each release as a presentation in itself, complete with original and individual artwork, features and an exhibition. each production will feature artwork shown in a cube of about 8 cubic meters. every record-released will be strictly-limited to 500 copies, which includes a poster referencing the piece made by the artist! daniel roth was born in seeheim near frankfurt. he started to experiment with different styles of electronical music using an akai mpc and a juno 106 in 1997. by this time he wasnt thinking of making music his profession. he then started his studies in skulpturing at the städel in frankfurt. after having finished art school he took up producing music again, influenced by his art and contemporary dance music styles. with his jax release he showcases his ability to combine different elements with his unique touch.

possibly the biggest release on off in 2011 so far! off 26 introduces two new talents to the label: berlin-based friends daniel dexter and nhan solo. they deliver >our thang<, a dead-funky discofied summer tune, based on samples which all lovers of 90ies hiphop will dearly remember. on the flip side, labelowner andre crom & martin dawson deliver a deeper, more linear interpretation, based around a mighty bassline and an epic slowdown in the main break. second remix comes from luca lozano & sacha robotti, who score with a raw and toolish groove, adding further elements of the sampled song and additional sweet vocals.

from the very outset, the m.c.d.e. remix of shit robots >answering machine< picks up in a completely different realm from marcus lambkins original, which appears on his 2010 debut, from the cradle to the rave. the stuttgart-based producer has replaced janine >planningtorock< rostrons slowly rising vocal opener with outerspace emanations that fade as they drift into a constellation of wide house grooves and deep bass. rostrons own pizzo remix is up next, and in (a)typical fashion, she takes the song and shifts its mood by clearing away the dancier elements of its predecessor in favor of a foundation of strings in every form: plucked pizzicato notes, low cellos tones, and high pitched violins that flit through. last up is another rostron creation, the whisper remix, which actually outpaces lambkins version in bpm, but is lighter all the same. here, she uses synths almost as a wash of white noise – a whisper, if you will – and only drops heavier vocals here and there along the songs rustling path.

rather lightweight live album, only thirty four minutes long, three songs and some painful applause herding for an encore. the line-up is essentially the girls line-up, though john g. perry s been replaced by an also-excellent mike wedgwood. the production is clear but the mix misjudged: the admittedly nicely brought out bass sound dwarfs all other elements. in particular, pye hastings guitar is very low, the drums never seem to match the bass volume.

pizza is the 6th release on dont be afraid, coming hot on the heels of mr. beatnicks synthetes ep and semteks west acyd shelter. the first track on the 12 inch, pizza, combines disco, techno and acid house elements on a broken funky base. goons is a mean little track with caper-like 303s and a bumping trumpet bassline, backed by sweet drum machine beats. dj 3000 takes the fundamentals of the original and replaces them with some of his own locally sourced detroit ingredients, including a euphoric rhodes and some rich pads, to create a peak time banger for fans of dirty bird and the like.

miles whittaker has been an integral part of the modern love label since its inception in 2002 - as one half of both pendle coven and demdike stare, as well as his own productions under the mlz and millie monikers. after almost 15 years writing music, this is the first release miles is putting out under his own name and marks a turning point of sorts in his production style, or rather, in its sequencing. the facets ep brings together different ends of his production style, unifying elements of the house and techno he s most commonly released as mlz together with the more broken production signatures usually reserved for millie and the darkened tribalism of demdike stare. flawed opens the set with a linn loop from the archives, stretched and slowed down with an intoxicated aesthetic that s somewhere between house and dub, before lustre re-configures source material originally keyed in by labelmate andy stott with a nice line in squashed percussion. primer on the flip extends from a demdike stare outtake and veers off into an analogue drum machine workout, before on the fly ends the set with a recording made straight to mixing desk from an array of mis-wired and malfunctioning drum boxes, contact microphones and samplers, over at his studio the mill earlier this year.

john dimas further adds to his rapidly growing reputation as he joins transatlantic label smoke city music (the sister label to hudd traxx) with the -addicted 2u ep-. three original tracks cover elements of classic detroit techno, chicago house and filtered french house, expertly combined with a modern approach. a deep, driving, techy and tribal-tinged remix of -relax- is provided by the hotly in-demand adam shelton (one records, 2020 vision). thessaloniki native john dimas is a well-known performer in greece and has steadily been building a reputation for himself on the world-s dance music scene in recent years. his music, which spans techno, acid and house, taking in influences from paris to detroit, has appeared on labels at the cutting edge of electronic music such as gigolo and time has changed. he has applied his remix touch to artists including fischerspooner, mirco violi and andi numan, and first appeared on smoke city in 2010 as a remixer of kev o-brien-s -floozies in jacuzzis-. future releases will see him appear on the claap, dieb audio, res lab and le borgne imprints

in addition to the >best of ambient< compilation from john beltran, two remixes are made to honour one of our favourite electronic music producers of all time. the a-side gives us a reinterpretation of >brilliant flood< from rising star kassem mosse together with his studiomate mix mup. this remix smoothly pimps up the track whilst leaving the atmosphere of the original intact. on the b-side, sven weisemann made a composition as a tribute to john beltran, which contains elements of different original cuts. the result is svens glorify tribute mix, a dreamy epic adventurous nine-minute masterpiece in three parts

the partnership between artists john selway and dave turov spans not only across the atlantic, but it has also resulted in a series of successful colla-borations on their label csm. the debut release on the interpull imprint showcases their signature no-nonsense, dance? oriented techno. expanding on their previous work, >choo got it ep< carries with it a modern take of classic in? uences from chicago, detroit, and berlin. this release is marked by just as much stylistic skill as it is by their technical skill: both selway and turov put the highest production values possible into their releases. the a-side of the ep, >choo got it<, grooves hard with an upbeat rhythm and a bouncing bass line that refuses to let up. combining funky house elements and a raw driving techno pace, this is the kind of track that either gets you on the dancefloor doesnt let you off once you hear it go on. the b-side, >way to my heart<, presents a darker take on the ep with plentiful bass and restless energy. it provides a cavernous sound thats happy to shake your techno cathedral of choice
